Matter, Zigbee, Thread or Wi‑Fi?

The labels on the box look complicated, but they come down to one question: how does the device talk to your home?

Wi‑Fi

The device connects straight to your router, with no hub. Ideal for mains-powered devices: relays, plugs, cameras, speakers. Not great for battery sensors, because Wi‑Fi uses more power.

Zigbee

A very low-power network made for sensors and switches. Batteries last for years. Every mains-powered device strengthens the network. It needs a hub, for example an Aqara hub, Homey Pro or Home Assistant with an adapter.

Thread

A newer standard, similar to Zigbee, with low power use and fast response. Thread devices work through a border router, which is built into some Aqara hubs, Apple TV, HomePod mini or Google Nest.

Matter

Matter isn't a network but a shared language. A device with the Matter label works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Home Assistant at the same time. Matter devices run over Wi‑Fi or Thread.

What this means for you

  • You want a few smart lights and plugs: Wi‑Fi devices, no hub.
  • You want many sensors: Zigbee or Thread with a hub.
  • You want freedom to switch apps and brands: look for Matter.
